I learned to tie the Fiador knot and you can too!
These directions are adapted from The Ashley Book of Knots. I find this method quicker and easier than the one done on a flat surface. My mom filmed and edited the video.
Good luck!

7 Tips for Tying the Fiador Knot
1. Don't give up. It took me about a month to find good resources that explained how to tie the knot well.
2. Finish all the steps before judging whether you've done it correctly. The knot does not look symmetrical while you are tying it, and often it looks wrong, while it is actually correct. |
3. Tighten the knot evenly. If one part is looser than the other, tighten that particular part of the knot.
4. Start with the correct type of rope--1/4" double braided polyester yachting rope. The incorrect rope makes the knot more difficult to tie, and it is also awkward to switch to the correct rope later, as it has a different feel. The polyester rope sold in hardware stores is too stiff. Buy your rope in a yachting store.
5. Start with about 6 feet of rope. The recommended length for rope halters is 20 feet, but when you are learning the extra rope makes it difficult to tie the Fiador Knot. If your rope is shorter than 6 feet, the knot will not fit into it.
6. Explore all the available resources, as you might find a different tying method easier than this one. Everyone is different!
7. Practice makes perfect. If you tie the knot just once, in a couple of days you might find out that you already forgot it. If you tied it correctly, congratulate yourself and repeat it a couple more times.
